Tallgrass Sandra Dallas 9780312360191 Books

This book was filled with characters that were so true to life that it was almost painful to read in some areas because it made me miss my greatest-generation farmer's daughter grandmother who passed away 30 years ago. I also LOVED the subject matter (the Japanese internment camps) which is an awesome backdrop to throw "ordinary" people into extraordinary circumstances. It made me wonder (and HOPE) that I would have acted as compassionately as the main family in this book did if I had lived during those trying times that nobody likes to talk about even to this day. Truly the mark of a great story! All in all--an amazing book that I sped through in like two days. The kind of novel that makes you rush home from work to finish.

I only gave it four stars out of five because of the ending which seemed rushed, unrealistic and jumbled. IMHO, this is unfortunately not a great who-done-it, (that would have made it absolutely perfect) but that fact is more than made up for in the excellent characters that made me sorry when the book was finished. I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Dallas's work in the future!

Tallgrass Sandra Dallas 9780312360191 Books Reviews

I started reading this book, Tallgrass, soon after it arrived, and I really hated to have to put it down to do my daily tasks. Luckily, it took me only two days to finish, reading only when I wasn't busy doing necessary things around the house. It is really an attention-grabbing/holding book. The author masterfully tells this story. It was especially interesting to me because my husband and I have visited Camp Amache in Eastern Colorado and saw what the author saw. I tried to imagine then how life in Camp Amache would have been, and this book confirmed and expanded those thoughts.

What our government did in locking up our own Japanese-American people was so unnecessary and so cruel. As one said, no one here locked up the German-Americans in our country. The book points out how these good Japanese people were forced to live in the camps and how their work ethic and intelligence helped the communities near which these camps were located. I'm so glad that Sandra Dallas wrote their story.
A compelling story of the Japanese imprisonment in WWII told from the perspective of a 10 year old girls watching the camp and its members from a nearby farm. The setting was vivid and believable knowing something about south-eastern Colorado. The member of her family and their heroism was inspiring. Each of the characters were well developed and interesting. Suggestions of parallels between the farm family and members of the interment camp were enfolded carefully. This was a book I will not forget as we are again faced with fears of others who are different from the majority of American citizens. We need to reminded of past political follies so we will not repeat them.
I loved the story but it had so many misspellings! I am dyslexic so this was very hard for me. The story is about the interment camps in Colorado and the author hit the nail on the head when describing the surroundings. The characters were very well done as well. You could picture everyone in this little town during the 1940s. I gave it 4 stars because I loved the story but it really needs to be edited before I recommend to a friend.
Purchased the E-book for a new, starting Book Club. It was highly rated by some of the members and was picked.
It was an educational story for me. I never knew there had been a Japanese Internment camp in CO. But then I was born in 1940 so I knew very little about World War II.
I do remember a few things; my mother holding her black, stamp, book and that we only got one pair of new shoes per yr. even if the old, worn, shoes hurt the feet because we out grew them. I was with her, once, when she went to the Red Cross to wrap bandages for the troops (although I was not totally aware for who & why). I, too, recall the big poster we walked by of Uncle Sam pointing his finger at us and saying "He wants YOU!" And I saw the large Rosie the Riveter poster with a scarf over her hair and holding a tool(?) but I didn't really understand her role except working.

I have memories of being next door at my aunt & uncles' home. She & her friend were getting ready to go dancing w/their spouses. (They called it going" Honky Tonking"). They were putting make-up on their legs to simulate nylon hose (rationed during the war) and using an eyebrow pencil trying to draw straight lines up the back of their legs to look like the seams that were common in those days. They were laughing during the process.
As I got older I became aware of my aunt always giving my mother a pair of nylons for Christmas for many yrs. and wrapping them up cleverly trying to disguise what they were to try to keep my mom guessing. One time the pkg. was tiny like a cigarette & mother was just sure it wasn't nylons that time but to her amazement and gleeful surprise my aunt had rolled them up so they fit inside a cigarette paper!
At 5 yr.s of age, I remember standing in a downpour to board a bus for home, when my mom began to cry. She seldom cried so I was alarmed & asked, "what was the matter?"
She cried, "The War is OVER! The War is OVER!" Up to that point, I was not aware there was a war.

So the book brought some long ago memories back to me.
As a long time resident of CO, I enjoyed learning the history of a part of the state during the years of WWII. The conflict and the mystery of a horrible murder, lent a growing tension to the storyline. The characters of the Stroud family were well developed, and the young teen Rennie was particularly appealing. The Japanese people introduced in the story were not well developed...every one of them was enthusiastic, kind, and 'hard workers'. Still, the story was quite interesting. Our book club overall enjoyed it.
