So after reading the last two in short order, I had some expectations going into this book. Sadly, it seems we are straying away from the game aspect (classes/stats/gear) in favor of maybe too much lore and questing. There is also a lot of pressure throughout the book due to the overwhelming might of the opposition breathing down their neck, not to mention the deadline from his latest quest. Its this "rushed" feeling I think that threw me off. Our MC has yet to have a chance to really play the game, instead he has just been leaping from one fire to the next never really in charge of his fate, pawn to both Emperors and Goddesses so its little surprise he hasn't really gotten to go questing, looting, and leveling.

Decent plot and the secrets are slowly showing themselves, but otherwise I felt like this book was more of a wind up for the climatic clashes that are ahead so I have to give it a 3 not out of respect for anything wrong but rather it just didn't surpass it''s predecessors and just maintained that hectic dash to the inevitable.

Many tough choices had to be made. It was a dozy of a ride throughout the book to try and accomplish the impossible. You know you wanna see how it all breaks down...
I can't wait to read the next one. I love the characters and the twist in events. While the way things moved in this book were good I do hope that the next one keeps me guessing.
Big fan of this author and am really enjoying this series. Lots of fighting but love how the MC uses his brain just as much as his muscles to work around problems and doesn't always do things the way that you expect him to. Can't wait for the next one in the series.
If you really care to invest in characters, and go on a journey with friends, then this book is for you. Well crafted characters, immense action, and just enough online facts to be believed in a fantastic way.
I have read all on Viridian Gate books, and these are quickly becoming classics in my collection!

While Jack's adventures are often challenging, it is only very rarely that they are close to impossible to beat. In this book, he needs to take a step back and really think things through a couple of times, especially at the end. I love that he uses outside the box thinking to come up with interesting solutions to problems, instead of just trying to overpower enemies. I especially appreciated his decision at the end! I hope he and the others don't focus so much on Osmark, though he is definitely an enemy now, and keep an eye on Thanatos and his people too.
Cons
- Game mechanics and character development are vague. Health, spirit, stamina, and magic pools aren't consistently nor accurately tracked; this makes the book more fantasy than litRPG IMO.

Pros
- The author wrote a pleasant tale. Steeped in battle, the main character faces moral dilemmas that accompany war; how he goes about dealing with them is not surprising but is at least intriguing.
When I recommend books to friends in the LITRPG genre this is the type of series I have them put at the top of their lists. I probably enjoyed this book more than the previous two but that is just me saying that this is my favorite of three equally solid books. I'm a nerd for character builds and stats but done in a way that we aren't getting stat dumped every two seconds. The main plot moves right along and before you know it you've just read this book in one sitting.
