This is one book that has always stayed with me ever since I was 14 and read it for the first time. It is a sweet story of Mel who has to deal with her mother's deteriorating mental health and the poverty they live in. After her mother is hospitalised, she finds that there are people willing to help her but she is reluctant to trust them. She grows through the book - dealing with grief and anger and channels her feelings constructively into redecorating her home - a place she associated with so much misery. This is a great YA romance and I have enjoyed all the Liz Berry books I have read.

Mel Liz Berry 9780140365344 Books Reviews

I have always enjoyed reading "Mel" by Liz Berry and luckily I own a copy. Though this is my second favorite book by her ("Easy Connections" is the first) I find that if it is read once, it must certainly be read a few more times. I only wish Liz Berry will republish "Easy Freedom" (that is the only one I do not own) and write a few more books!
but that's something you don't notice. I didn't know Liz Berry wrote anything else, Mel is absolutely my favorite book. I have 3 copies, one hardcover, because an old bookstore that had it closed, and lucky lucky me i got a chance to buy them out. The first copy, which i got as a gift, sat in the back of my closet for over 2 years before i read it because it looked boring. Don't fall victem to that trap! I liked it especially because Mitch reminded me of my best friend/on-and-off boyfriend, and Mel's mum reminded me of my own.
I had very high hopes for this book after reading "The China Garden", but "Mel" was only okay. Yeah, it was quick, easy read, but it lacked depth & was a bit cheesy at times. It just didn't have that "stay up all night reading it" quality, which is what I look for. I am just disappointed with it & I wouldn't really recommend it, read "The China Garden" instead.
While this book did not quite have the magic of "Easy Connections", it was still an excellent read. I liked reading about the house renovations, and picturing the transformation, as much as the romance. "Mel" deals with issues of poverty and racism and in that sense seems more realistic than "Easy Connections", yet it gets a bit slapstick in parts and some of the rock'n'roll characters don't quite mesh with the rest of the story. However, I would still highly recommend this book for any Liz Berry fans or readers who like a good romance with some substance to it. P.S. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of "Easy Freedom"? I have never seen this book but would love to read it.
Picked this up one afternoon at my local library, I had no idea about the incredible insanity that was about to unfold. Spoilers!

Mel lives with her mentally unstable mother, she has low self esteem and no self respect. His mother is abusive and a hoarder, and Mel contemplates suicide. It is not long after this that the story stumbles. The mother gets taken away an vanishes from the rest of the book, till her forced reintroduction and rehabilitation at the end. This about happens to every other character as well. She makes a friend who is the ever so classy sassy black friend then she helps fix up her house and also disappears until the plot needs her again (mainly to tell Mel to show of her tits in an ugly party dress and in weirder part of the book asks Mel if she's keeping her baby, when she just had sex the night before? what?) And then there's the ending. After some Rock/party/event that gets real slapsticky, I was hoping she would break up with Whatshisfacerockerguy and grow a spine (Dude seemed pretty Bi-Polar to me.) but no. Mel becomes a Mary Sue. Every character just fawns over her and is ready to bend over backwards for her. Such absurdities appear in the plot that I had to either laugh out loud or reiterate passages to my sister just to confirm what the hell I read was real.
Love! This story is so touching
A very retro take of the Cinderella story, but with a very realistic approach towards depression and mental illness and can be quite a heavy read in some parts of the book. But overall a very modern bittersweet take on the Cinderella story, and I'm happy to be able to own this book after quite a Long time searching to buy a copy as part of my collection of books from my early teenage years.
